Mental Health Increasing While help is Decreasing

Adults with any type of mental illness in the past year: 45.1 million. Adults with serious mental illness: 11 million. Published studies report that about 25 percent of all U.S. adults have a mental illness and that nearly 50 percent of U.S. adults will develop at least one mental illness during their lifetime



What causes mental illness?

There is no single cause for mental illness. A number of factors can contribute to risk for mental illness, such as:

  • Early adverse life experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse (for example, child abuse, sexual assault, witnessing violence, etc.)

  • Experiences related to other ongoing (chronic) medical condition, such as cancer or diabetes.

  • Biological factors, such as genes or chemical imbalances in the brain

  • Use of alcohol or recreational drugs
